Top student Charlie will become the first member of his family to attend university when he begins his degree course this September.

While many young men from the Traveller community leave full-time schooling by their early teens,  Charlie instead found joy and success in education at Carmel College, in Darlington.

His hard work led him to receive an A* grade in Physical Education, and As in Biology and Chemistry at A-Level today, when he opened his results with his friends and sisters.

Now, he is proud to accept an offer to study Pharmacy at Newcastle University.
