Turing Scheme Visit to Estepona, Spain
As part of Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust’s commitment to providing exceptional opportunities and widening experiences for all pupils, children from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Coundon recently took part in an international visit to Estepona, Spain, through the government-funded Turing Scheme.
This memorable visit enabled pupils to experience life in another country, develop independence, and gain a deeper understanding of different cultures and communities.
Expanding Horizons Through Travel
The journey began with an early departure to Leeds Bradford Airport, followed by a flight to Málaga. For many pupils, this was their first time travelling abroad, making the experience especially significant.
From arrival on the Costa del Sol, pupils embraced the opportunity to explore new surroundings and step outside of their comfort zones, reflecting the Trust’s vision of developing confident, aspirational learners.
International Learning and Partnership
A central part of the visit was the partnership with Queen’s British Grammar School in Estepona, where pupils were warmly welcomed into the school community.
During the visit, pupils:
- Participated in lessons alongside Spanish and international peers
- Met and spent time with their pen pals
- Shared learning experiences across cultures
This collaboration supported pupils in building communication skills, confidence, and global awareness, key priorities across Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust.
Cultural Enrichment in Spain
Beyond the classroom, pupils engaged in a range of cultural experiences designed to broaden their understanding of Spanish life.
Activities included:
- A visit to Estepona’s bullring museum, exploring local history and traditions
- Enjoying authentic Spanish cuisine, including a traditional paella
- Practising Spanish language skills in real-world contexts
These opportunities helped pupils develop a greater appreciation for cultural diversity and life beyond their local community.

Visit to Estepona Town Hall
Pupils met the Mayor of Estepona, learning about the town’s history and civic life.
Selwo Aventura Wildlife Park
At Selwo Aventura, pupils explored wildlife habitats and developed an understanding of conservation and environmental responsibility.
Coastal Experience
Time was also spent enjoying the Spanish coastline, allowing pupils to reflect and appreciate their surroundings.
A Visit to Málaga
On the final day, pupils visited Málaga, where they:
- Explored the city’s historic and cultural landmarks
- Visited the cathedral
- Experienced the vibrant atmosphere of a major Spanish city
This provided a fitting conclusion to an inspiring and enriching visit.

It was incredible to see friendships, first formed through letters, come to life in person and to watch our pupils fully immerse themselves in Spanish culture.
The visit has already had a powerful impact, developing their confidence, resilience, independence and global awareness. At St Joseph’s, we are committed to ensuring every child has access to experiences that raise aspirations and show them they can achieve anything they set their minds to.”
